Bump keys are uniquely cut keys designed to bypass the security features of traditional pin and tumbler locks. Bump keys, also referred to as “999 keys,” exploit a vulnerability inherent in traditional pin and tumbler locks. These keys are meticulously crafted with all ridges set to the maximum depth (999) using specialized key-making equipment, and they are easily produced, typically in under five minutes.

Bump Key Function Explanation:

Pin and tumbler locks consist of pin stacks containing spring-loaded pins that obstruct the cylinder from turning without the correct key. These locks feature two types of pins: driver pins and key pins. Each pin stack comprises these two pins pressed tightly together by a small spring connected to the driver pin. The alignment of the meeting point between these pins varies for each stack, necessitating keys to be cut at different depths to accommodate this misalignment. When the correct key is inserted, it aligns all the meeting points of the pin stacks, creating what’s called a “shear line.” Once this shear line is formed, the lock can rotate freely within the cylinder, enabling the door to be unlocked.
